It seems like things start getting worn out every 5 to 10 years... We're coming up on our 10 year anniversary and everything is falling apart (besides our relationship - it's great). What I'm talking about is the digital camera, video camera, vacuum, vehicles, mattress, DVD player, etc. It's time to shop for some new ones. What do you have that you like or don't like? Do you have anything (even besides the ones I mentioned) that have lasted longer than 5 years? 10 years?
I've been looking at digital cameras on-line today - I'm interested in a quick shot camera with a good battery life. I don't need huge megapixels or a manual lens. And it obviously doesn't have to be ultra compact. Do they even make quick shot semi-compact cameras that are less than $500? If it's not a quick shot, then what kind of "point and shoot" camera is good?

We've had both an Olympus and a Canon so far with digital cameras. I liked the Olympus in every way except that you had to manually open the lens cover and it was so sensitive that when you were taking a picture, sometimes it would close on you and shut the camera off, making it very difficult to get that special impromptu moment.
I love our Canon PowerShot A590IS, it's fast, easy to use and has video with sound. It is quick to take pictures and takes nice ones; though now, it is getting to where it will take a picture and then take a long time to get ready for the next picture. So, it's not lasting 5 years in that sense.
I just got my first vacuum, so I can't help you there - it's a Hoover hand me down, but it works great!
Bummer that everything is breaking on you. But I hope you have a fun time shopping!
I love my little Canon PowerShot as well but its not old at all so I can't help you out there.
We used a hand-me-down vacuum until about 5 years ago when I got my Electrolux canister that could handle my stairs. I basically got it because it was supposed to be good for people with asthma (according to all sorts of stuff from my asthma dr.)and it ranked really well on Consumer Reports. Supposedly I can use the thing as an air filter if I take the hose off--haven't tried that. But it is really light and easy to use and has just insane power! It handles our cat hair issues with no problem!
Can't help with the mattress as we are also in need of a new one. Keith got this one a year before we got married and it is really showing its age. If you find one you like, please let us know!
Have fun shopping!
I hear you on everything breaking/getting worn out! Uggh! I think we need 10 year showers, too! :) I have a Dyson vacuum cleaner and I love it.
I just had the same question. I asked one of my friends who's a photographer, and she sent me an email of recommendations. I'll try to remember to send it to you.
We love our sleep comfort bed. There's a warranty of 20 years on it and we haven't had any problems with it. In fact, we decided to upgrade to a king size bed and found a screaming deal for a king size bedroom set + sleep comfort mattress set for $750 on craigslist. There's no bed more comfortable than our SC bed. :D
Ehh, we bought cheap things the first time around and now everything is breaking down 6 yrs into things, so I'm no help!
the Canon powershot that runs on regular batteries is lousy. The old version used 4 batteries and lasted quite a while. The newer, lighter version uses just 2 batteries and it drains them constantly.
Can't recommend much that lasts longer than 5-10 years. That sounds about right. I just suggest picking up new used stuff at garage sales and on Craig's list.
I love our canon powershot sd 300 (?) I think that's the # but we've had it for 5+ years and the battery is just now needing to be replaced- LOVE IT!
