Spiderman

Jared had a homework assignment towards the end of the year.  He was supposed to think of something he wanted to teach the class.  We talked about making sandwiches, tying shoes, or other things he was good at doing.  He wasn't interested in anything we came up with.  What Jared wanted to teach (and what he thought he was really good at) is how to catch spiders!  Okay.... not your typical thing to teach a kindergarten class.  We wondered if he would be allowed to bring a REAL spider to let loose and then catch.  Uh... NO.  The teacher said "no live creatures allowed."  I can see it though - all the girls screaming and the boys saying "Cool!" as it scurried away... :)

Unfortunately, we did have a bunch of spiders at our rental house.  Alex didn't like squashing them, so he taught the boys how to catch them in a cup with a piece of cardboard and take them outside.  Jared IS good at catching spiders!  I don't like to mess with them, but the boys thought it was pretty cool to catch them.  We even had a designated "spider cup" and cardboard to use for catching spiders.

Anyway, so Jared wouldn't give up the idea of teaching his class how to catch spiders.  We came up with a simple pipe cleaner spider he could teach them to make and then show how to catch the craft spider.  It was fun to watch him teach, although his classmates didn't listen very well.  Several of them "didn't get how to do it."  I could see the frustration as he tried to explain again what he was doing.  It's hard to be a teacher!  Jared did well though.  Maybe sometime he can show how to catch a REAL spider.

We'll have to let him and Nicholas team up. After doing our bug collection, Nicholas got pretty proficient as well. He could probably learn a thing or two from Jared. Nicholas learned to not be as scared about spiders and stinging insects through this. Although Jared might be appalled that Nicholas wants to cart them to the freezer instead of outside.
