Broken arm for a week

I got a phone call from the school one afternoon, saying that Owen was complaining about his arm that he hurt playing basketball.  He said it hurt in two different places, at his inner elbow and his wrist.  He'd fallen on his arm and it was hurting quite a bit.  We went ahead and took him to the urgent care to check it out.  They did x-rays, told us that it was fractured, and that we needed to schedule a time to come in for a cast.  They put a temporary cast on it and a sling.
A couple days later we went to get the cast, but the specialist said it wasn't clear from the x-rays whether he actually fractured it.  She said it's possible that he fractured it along the growth plate, but we wouldn't be sure until 7-10 days later.  So, Owen wore the temporary cast and sling for about 9 days, until we went in for the follow-up and determined it wasn't fractured.  He was really happy not to miss the upcoming basketball season.  I guess he got to experience what it would be like to have a broken arm for a week.  He didn't like the cast or sling, but it made a nice addition to his Halloween costume (a "lame duck"!).
